Don’t Miss the 30% Federal Solar Tax Credit: What You Need to Know Before 2025
If you’re planning to go solar, timing is everything. The 30% Federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC) is one of the most valuable incentives available to homeowners and businesses investing in solar — but it’s scheduled to expire at the end of 2025.
To secure your eligibility, your solar project must be fully completed before the deadline. That means every step — from permits to final inspections — needs to be wrapped up by year’s end. Below, we’ve outlined the critical milestones and requirements to help you stay on track.
Key Steps for Project Completion
1. Building Permit Application
-
For properties owned under an LLC, Trust, or similar entity, documentation proving the signatory’s authority as an owner or member is required.
2. PSEG Application
-
Must be signed by the property owner or the individual listed on the PSEG account.
3. Site Visit Preparation
-
Install all non-solar roof penetrations before our measurement visit.
-
Finalize electrical equipment specifications and placement (installation preferred).
-
Decide on installation-specific details like generator specs, conduit routing, or exterior equipment placement in advance where possible.
4. Engineering & Permit Submittal
-
After roof measurements, plans are drafted and submitted for engineering approval.
-
Once approved and stamped, we file the building permit application.
-
Be aware: municipal review can take up to six weeks.
5. Rough-In Phase
-
Begins once mechanical and plumbing systems are roughed in and house electrical is nearly complete.
6. Module & Equipment Installation
-
Typically requires about one week, depending on weather.
-
If a whole-house generator is present, it must integrate with an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS), which must be energized.
-
WiFi connectivity must be active for system monitoring and reporting to PSEG.
7. Closeout Process
To close out your project, you’ll need:
-
Permanent electrical service and an energized meter.
-
A copy of your PSEG bill (front and back).
-
A successful electrical inspection.
-
PSEG closeout requirements:
Commissioned monitoring system with onsite WiFi
-
Electrical inspection certificate
-
PSEG bill copy
-
Final payment (including retention)
Why Timing Matters
Solar projects involve many moving parts, and some steps—like permit reviews and utility approvals—can take several weeks or even months. If you anticipate any delays that could push your project beyond 2025, it’s critical to notify your Account Manager or Project Manager immediately so we can adjust accordingly.
Important Disclaimer
-
Utility Delays: As of now, PSEG Long Island (PSEGLI) processes Permission to Operate (PTO) approximately 2–3 weeks after receiving final documentation. Even if your project is completed by year-end, PTO may not be issued before December 31. In such cases, GreenLogic will provide a Certificate of Completion, confirming your system is finished and ready for commissioning in 2025.

Tax Guidance: GreenLogic does not provide tax advisory services. Please consult with a qualified tax professional to confirm your eligibility for the 30% Federal ITC.
